Detroit People's Platform
The People’s Platform is a broad network of Detroit-based social justice organizations, activists, and residents committed to bringing about just transformation in economics and social dynamics through popular education, celebration, and organizing. We use data, analysis, advocacy, media and organizing to protect and increase participation in the democratic process and to demand that state and local decision makers consider racial equity and economic justice in their planning, funding, and policymaking decisions.
We’re committed to working towards a fair and just Detroit. We believe that each and every Detroiter has a voice in deciding the future of the city. We support and organize with District Caucus Leaders who live and work in each of the Detroit council districts. Over the past 2 years we have grown a Network of over 3000 Detroiters, with 300 Members and about 20 active Caucus Leaders.
The Platform emerged from our 2013 Convention where residents and activists from across the city ratified our five platform issues as essential to a sustainable, high quality of life for all Detroiters. We address the issues of Land, Food, Transit, Good Jobs, Governance, Poverty and Inequality through our work. We respect and support existing organizations that have historically addressed fundamental issues like Detroit’s education crisis.
The People’s Platform have supported the work of numerous grassroots organizations to develop Community Land Trusts and other tools designed to empower community in the face gentrification and displacement. Our Transit Team have been worked closely with bus dependent Detroiters to advocate for reestablishing service, increasing safety and for the inclusion of Detroiters in decision making process.
The People’s Platform also worked in coalition with Economic Alliance of Michigan (EJAM) to increase the minimum wage in Michigan and are currently working for paid sick leave in the state. Though our participation in the Equitable Detroit Coalition (EDC) we promote the importance of Community Benefits Agreements state-wide and work toward a CBA Ordinance for the city of Detroit.
As part of our work on Poverty and Inequality we are active members of the People’s Water Board Coalition to address the water crisis, particularly focusing on pubic health issues and water shut-offs. We are also members of the national Right to the City Alliance and have been actively supporting residents through the tax-foreclosure crisis and organizing with tenants through our Homes For All campaign.
