To: Saint Paul City Councilmembers and Mayor Coleman

Hey Saint Paul! Go-To Sustainable To-Go Packaging!

We encourage Saint Paul City Councilmembers to pass the Sustainable To Go Packaging Ordinance.

Why is this important?

The City of Saint Paul is developing an ordinance that would reduce waste, protect our health and the environment, and ensure that disposable items are reduced, reused, recycled, or composted. The Sustainable To-Go Packaging Ordinance would require food businesses to provide to-go packaging that is reusable, recyclable, or compostable. (Similar to an ordinance successfully passed in Minneapolis last year called Green To Go. www.minneapolismn.gov/health/inspections/greentogo)

We believe the proposed Saint Paul Sustainable To Go Packaging Ordinance is a positive step to a more equitable, just, and zero waste future for the City of Saint Paul. “To go” packaging items that are not recyclable or compostable create unintended and harmful impacts on our health and environment.

Many cities around the country have implemented similar ordinances with great benefit to their community. By adopting this ordinance our communities can work together towards reducing waste, preserving our environment, and protecting the health of our families and communities for generations to come.

We encourage the City of Saint Paul to support a smooth transition for our community businesses owners by financially supporting creative ways to comply with the ordinance, including support for investments (i.e. dishwashers, reusable plates), organizing cooperative buying of compostable and recyclable products, and providing education and support for sourcing and purchasing by supporting the collaboration between organizations, distributors, and businesses.

We the undersigned businesses, organizations, and individuals support the proposed Saint Paul Sustainable To Go Packaging Ordinance and commend the City for taking a positive step for the health of our community

How it will be delivered

At the public hearing Wednesday, October 4, 5:30pm, City Council Chambers (15 W Kellogg Blvd, 3rd floor).
