Help Not Handcuffs

Help Not Handcuffs

Establish and fund a non-police mental health crisis response team.

Why is this important?

When the police respond to mental health crises, they do not keep us safe. Instead, they often escalate situations while negatively impacting community health across New Orleans communities. NOPD is not the proper institution to address most safety concerns, including mental health crises. There is no strategic way to train a police officer to respond to a mental health crisis with the same expertise that a professional mental healthcare provider would use to problem solve.

Reasons for signing

  • As someone who receives treatment and takes medication for mental health conditions, I want to advocate for those who are also scrutinized because of relentless mental health stigma. Safety for all is important and in escalated situations there should be numerous strategies implemented instead of more pain being inflicted upon all parties involved.
  • I think police should be informed if a person is suffering from mental health issues .The police should not alway go for deadly force on every occasion
  • Police trigger people already in crisis. Simply due to their uniform and the oppression it has cause both historically and today. We need more programs like. CAHOOTS. It will be safer for everyone, including cops.
