Help Not Handcuffs

Help Not Handcuffs

Establish and fund a non-police mental health crisis response team.

Why is this important?

When the police respond to mental health crises, they do not keep us safe. Instead, they often escalate situations while negatively impacting community health across New Orleans communities. NOPD is not the proper institution to address most safety concerns, including mental health crises. There is no strategic way to train a police officer to respond to a mental health crisis with the same expertise that a professional mental healthcare provider would use to problem solve.

Reasons for signing

  • NOPD is not trained to deal with mental health issues or how to de-escalate situations. Furthermore, due to systemic racism, POC are disproportionally affected by this lack of training which is unacceptable.
  • People with mental illness are seven to 16 times more likely to be killed by police. There are trained behavioral health specialists who can respond to these calls to keep the dignity of people with mental illness intact.
  • NOPD is not equipped or trained to handle mental health issues.
