Safeguard Corobrick Quarry

Dear Honourable Minister Zwane,

Please intervene by implementing measures that will ensure the safety of the people living in Heidedal and surrounding areas from the dangers associated with an abandoned mining site.

Hold those to account responsible for land rehabilitation.

Hold those to account responsible for the negligence that led to loss of innocent lives from site abandonment to date.

Communicate the latest Environmental Impact Assessment Study through to the people of Heidedal as stakeholders.

Why is this important?

The Corobrick Quarry is an unfenced, abandoned clay mine situated in the centre of the densely populated area of Heidedal and has been the source of many innocent lives lost and destroyed.

For many years the people of Heidedal were terrorised by the the blasting of dynamite for commercial clay mining.Due to these blast the people of Heidedal had to endure structural damages to houses which had to be fixed at own expense. This in spite of the fact that no employment benefits were allocated to  Heidedalers.

This Honourable  Minister was an insult that the people of Heidedal had to suffer for many years but to add more injury to insult, Corobrick closed their factory and left as if they had no responsibility towards the land from which they have enriched themselves and also as if there rested no obligation or concern for the safety of people in Heidedal and surrounding areas.

No rehabilitation took place as required by law  and this over the years resulted in the destruction and loss of many lives. Not only  those that died on this neglegted mine but the legacy of heartache left behind for families to deal with.

The land is not fenced and part of it is being used as a dumping site that juxtapose a healthy and clean living environment for the Heidedal community.

The law is clear on the safeguarding of unused mining sites in order to protect surrounding communities from injury and loss of life.

Honourable Minister the past weekend we have had another innocent young man -Justin Jacobs whose body had to be dived out from this open and unsecured quarry.

Is it not your Departments responsibility to hold the Capitalist and landowners  to account in terms of the rehabilitation of the land and most importantly to safeguard our people from the potential dangers that exist due to this neglect?

Honourable Minister we have noticed with admiration and dismay how the Lily mine families  received support from you and your Department.

The dismay stems from the fact that all these deaths from our people in Heidedal were completely overlooked and to date the open and unsecured quarry remains attractive to young people to swim in on a hot summers day, to their detriment and demise. This open and unsecured area is also a breeding ground for criminals. Over the years many murders, rapes and other violent crimes were reported from this site.

The purpose of this petition is to seek your urgent  intervention and support in providing a solution to this serious problem and to also sympathise with the Heidedal community by holding those responsible for this neglect accountable.

We the people of Heidedal humbly request that you listen to our plight for we have lost one life to many due to this utter injustice.
