To: The Honorable Kathy Hochul, Governor of New York

Stop the Deportation. Keep Shakoure Home, Clemency Now.

Right now is as urgent as ever to Stop the Deportation of Pascal Shakoure Charpentier, our son, our brother, a man engaged to a heroic COVID-19 nurse, a friend to many, mentor to at-risk youths, and a builder of businesses, by granting him a pardon today.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has shown mercy and forgiveness by issuing pardons to people who have engaged in thoroughgoing rehabilitation while serving their sentences.

We ask Gov. Hochul to again affirm that people can transform and grow and mature beyond the actions they took while teenagers. Shakoure is a U.S. citizen who, because of a legal technicality, has received a deportation order.

Without a pardon from Gov. Hochul he could at any time be deported to Haiti, a struggling country he has never lived in, has no support, and for which he has never held citizenship.

Why is this important?

A Father, Fiancé, and Community Leader Faces Deportation - We Need Your Help!

His Story
Born to American parents on a U.S. Air Force base in Germany, Shakoure has known no other home but America. Now, ICE threatens to tear him away from everything and everyone he loves - all because of mistakes made over 33 years ago when he was just 18. This is despite the fact that

Why This Matters Now
Imagine being ripped away from your family without warning. This is the daily fear that haunts Shakoure, his family, and greater community. In July 2020, ICE shattered their peace with an arrest based on a decades-old conviction - one for which he's already paid his debt to society.

A Journey of Redemption
As a teenager, Shakoure made serious mistakes. His association with the wrong group led to a 25-year sentence, though he wasn't present at the tragic subway incident that claimed a life. But what happened next is remarkable.

Instead of letting prison define him, Shakoure:
  • Earned not just two Bachelor's degrees, but a Master's from NY Theological Seminary
  • Completed over two dozen  certification programs
  • Became a mentor, facilitator and counselor to other incarcerated men
  • Earned early release through exemplary behavior
  • Became the subject of a short documentary called "23 Reasons Why 23 Years is Enough"

Today, He's an Asset to His Community
Despite facing the threat of deportation, he has shown a commitment to rehabilitation and making positive contributions to his community and society at large.
  • Since his release in 2015, Shakoure has dedicated himself to preventing others from following his past path. Through his non-profit From Bars II Beyond, he gives at-risk youth the tools and training they need to begin a path in media production while investing in their potentials.
  • Shakoure is also the tech advisor and a board member of the Memphis based non-profit, Inventors, Makers, and Movers (IMM), which intersects African American inventions from the past with today's innovative expressions of art for educational exhibits throughout the U.S.
  • Moreover, he has gained prominence as founder and CEO of Transcendence Media, an interactive 3D design studio through which he has worked with a variety of brands like Nike, Wells Fargo, Hilton, Luxottica, Pandora, Raising Cane's and others.

Along with his extensive family, all U.S. citizens, and broader circle of supporters, we call on the rest of NEw Yorkers to make a plea to the Governor for her intervention. New York needs more people like the Shakoure of today - someone who turns past wounds into wisdom that helps others.

In His Own Words

"At the core of this case is a very large family of American citizens who are suffering. I can't even fathom how my family is able to continue bearing the threat of my deportation."

What You Can Do
This isn't just about one man - it's about believing in redemption, keeping families together, and recognizing that someone who has transformed their life deserves a second chance.
