Sign the Petition to Drop the False Charges on Union Transit Worker

Have the frame-up Charges against Darryl Goodwin dropped

Why is this important?

UPDATE: It is with great sadness that we write that Darryl Goodwin has passed away. Goodwin was working a lot of overtime to make up for wages he lost as part of the deal to get him rehired. It is the belief of many, including Vice President of Stations Derick Echevarria, that the stress of this situation was a contributing factor in Goodwin's death. Our thoughts are with the family and all those around Goodwin grieving his loss. He was a person supported by his community, as was seen at his most recent hearing when the courts were packed by coworkers, friends, and family.

A fifty-four year old African American public transit worker is facing unwarranted serious charges, for doing his job according to MTA rules.

On May 16, a lieutenant accused station agent Darryl Goodwin of not assisting him in catching a shoplifter. The lieutenant—who is equipped with a MetroCard and has keys that can open the gates, like all NYPD officers—demanded that the MTA worker let him through the gate. The worker, however, was busy assisting an elderly passenger, and as per MTA rules, station agents are required to assist passengers before turning their attention to anyone asking for gate access.

Because he didn’t immediately stop assisting a passenger and open the gate for an NYPD member who could open the gate himself, Goodwin is charged with obstruction of governmental justice, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.

Is this how we treat a 27-year MTA veteran and member of TWU Local 100?

Sign the petition and tell the MTA Board, Mayor Bill de Blasio, and the Presiding Judge that these charges are absurd! Stand with Darryl Goodwin and workers to say DROP THE FALSE CHARGES!
