Tell Governor Abbott to implement a rent freeze and moratorium on all evictions in Texas now!

In the face of an escalating public health crisis, we demand that Governor Greg Abbott implement a rent freeze and moratorium on layoffs, evictions and water shut offs in the state of Texas.

Why is this important?

Coronavirus (COVID-19) is now officially classified as a pandemic and the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases Director has stated, “it’s going to get worse''. Across media outlets, the prevailing safety precautions include “wash your hands" and “stay home”. However, residents in this state are not guaranteed to have access to these basic necessities. Water shut-offs, evictions and homelessness significantly worsen the threat posed by COVID-19. If more residents are evicted during this period, COVID-19 could start to spread more rapidly among those who become homeless. We cannot afford to have more emergencies on top of the current emergency.

We urge Governor Greg Abbott to follow the lead of Detroit and San Jose - to stand with your constituents, to stop preventable illness and displacements and implement a rent freeze and moratorium on all evictions, utility shut offs, and job layoffs in the state of Texas.

Reasons for signing

  • Way too soon to unfreeze rents and utilities just yet, the state only just started opening back up mid-way through the month and there are businesses that are still closed. Plus some of us are at higher risk than others.
  • This pandemic is getting worse. And just for my household we have lost almost $3000 of our normal household income. Thank God, I’m an essential worker in the medical field or we would be totally without income awaiting the political game to see what fate our lives will take. But, my husband has lost his income and the financial strain of that alone while he awaits Unemplyment is not good. Good, hardworking Americans need some type of relief because “bills” accrue monthly not once.
  • I do not have anymore $$
