Call (718) 739-4262! Tell ADI Management NO MORE RACIST TENANT HARASSMENT! FIRE Herchin Ablai NOW!

Flood ADI Management, Inc with calls - (718) 739-4262 !
Tell Herbert Donner to fire notorious building superintendent Herchin Ablai IMMEDIATELY for his racist violence and harassment of long-time tenants of color at 60 Turner Place in Flatbush, Brooklyn . Even with several news stories (see below) about the racial profiling and discrimination of Herchin Ablai, his employer ADI Management has done nothing to stop the tenant harassment .

Known as an infamous slumlord, Herbert Donner and ADI Management, Inc, wants to drive out long-term tenants and gentrify 60 Turner Place . Already several long-time tenants of color have been forced to move out due to Herchin Ablai's racist tenant harassment. This then allows ADI Management, Inc to overcharge new largely white tenants for their rent-stabilized apartments.

One family of color at 60 Turner Place had to obtain a restraining order against Herchin Ablai after he purposely locked their CHILDREN in the laundry room . The mother was so distraught by this act of violence that she lost consciousness and had to be rushed to the hospital in an ambulance . All of this has been to the delight of Herbert Donner who refuses to fire Herchin Ablai . In fact, Herchin Ablai was overheard gloating to another resident, "one by one, one by one", as an
African American long-term tenant was getting the last of her things from the building .

Why is this important?

According to a May 2015 letter to ADI Management, Inc created by the
tenants of 60 Turner Place: "Many of us have been subjected to
screaming and verbal abuse by the superintendent; name calling, and
not responding to tenants legitimate concerns regarding repairs in a
timely manner, and when he does, the repairs leave much to be desired.
In a face-to-face conversation held with the owner, when told that the
superintendent cannot fix anything, he responded with the following,
”I did not put him there to fix anything, I put him there because he’s
nasty”. This has proven itself to be true on an ongoing basis. We are
being treated like second class citizens, and even more importantly,
being treated like we don’t belong here. It is very expensive here,
and many if not most of us pay our rents on time. We are not begging
to live here and refuse to be harassed or discriminated against
anymore. Today we stand our ground, and certainly not going to be
harassed out of our homes. The superintendent is making many of our
lives miserable. Examples of sentiments expressed by some tenants
include the following: “I don’t feel comfortable living here anymore”.
“ I feel like I have to walk on eggshells”. When my lease expires, I
am considering not renewing it”. “ I feel anxious every time I am in
the lobby”. The superintendent has engaged in the following behaviors,
most of which we consider to be bullying in the form of mental
intimidation, and harassment. He blows a whistle when minority tenants
are talking in the lobby, turns up the lobby music extremely loud,
walks away when he is asked a question, shows up unannounced at our
doors instead of scheduling, and screams at tenants, as well as
engages in name calling. On several occasions, he has told tenants
that he will “get rid of people” He and his wife have referred to some
tenants as either “you Black people” and “you people”.

The superintendent has been barred from entering certain apartments,
and not allowed to enter at least one of them alone. There is one
known case of a tenant family having a restraining order against him.
Another neighbor has barred him from entering his apartment due to
several instances of name-calling, almost physical altercations, and
the police being called. On yet another occasion this past February,
the superintendent made what can be considered a threat to another
tenant. There are allegations of him spitting on some tenants.
Finally, the super screamed at an elderly tenant, and even resorted to
calling her a racist name. There are other situations however, tenants
are afraid to speak up publically due to fear of retaliation. The
superintendent has single handedly caused our greater than 30 year
courtesy of having our packages held for us, a thing of the past.
Currently, all packages are being left in the lobby, a situation that
is both unsafe and unsecured. There are wheel chair bound tenants in
the building, and they usually have difficulty getting around large
boxes and gaining easy access to their mailboxes. Many tenants have
tripped over boxes and have reported packages missing. We did not have
this situation before.

Incompetence: when asked about repairs the superintendent responds,
though sometimes in an untimely manner. In a number of instances, he
has gone in to “repair broken pipes etc., but each time, has had to
return 3-4 times to address the same issue. Sometimes, he will leave a
job unfinished without informing the tenant if and or when he will
return. In one particular case, an elderly tenant had a leak under her
kitchen sink. The super returned on three separate occasions to take
care of it, with the final result ending with her placing a bucket
under the sink to collect water.
In light of the aforementioned allegations and reports, we are asking
for the immediate resignation of Mr. Herchin Ablai. We have enjoyed
residing at 60 Turner Place, and would like very much to continue
living here, but not under these circumstances. We are fed up and not
going to take it anymore. "

December 10th, 2016

Attn: Mr. Herbert Donner

As a follow up to our meeting on November 17th 2016, we write in the hope that we can resolve the various issues in the building that we discussed during the meeting. We repeat here that as a baseline gesture of good faith, we expect that by the end of this month, management will permanently remove Herchin Ablai as superintendent of the building, and replace him with someone that is “a better fit” . In view of all the incidents that we discussed during the meeting, we will assume that management is not concerned about our basic humanity and, by that, is not interested in resolution. If management does not replace the superintendent by December 31st, we will be guided accordingly.

Please contact Reina Seedarnee or Hazel Duke should you have any questions about this letter.
Sincerely,
The 60 Turner Place Tenant Association

IMPORTANT UPDATE from TENANT LEADERS at #60TurnerPlace
“Since people have been calling, the tenants room has been cleaned up somewhat. The laundry room hours have been extended. So prior to these changes, we have been trying to get our room back for close to a year but was always given another reason why we could not use it. We petitioned to have the laundry room open throughout the weekend and got it, though many times it would open late on Saturday mornings and close on Sunday night's.  We petitioned to have our packages be stored in the package room like they used to be,  and have been denied several times. We took it to DHCR, and got a denial 2 weeks ago. The packages were kept in the  room for more that 30 years and and when the super came and got into a fight with the UPS delivery man, things changed.
We have been fighting to have our windows replaced, because they are old and a lot of cold air comes in with little heat. We have been told that we have to pay for them. “
