To: The United States Senate

Demand Mitch McConnell Apologize for Silencing Elizabeth Warren!

Though Sessions has been approved it is still necessary for McConnell to apologize for silencing Senator Warren while allowing men like Sen. Udall read the exact same letter from Coretta Scott King. Join me in demanding that he apologize to Sen. Warren and women in general for his sexism. The Senate only allowed the letter written by Coretta Scott King in 1986 into testimony about the unacceptability of Sessions as Attorney General, as his record in dealing with the needs and concerns of African Americans shows his lack of fitness for this position, once it was read by a white man.We want the Senate to hold Mitch McConnell accountable for his unprecedented and inappropriate dismissal of Sen. Warren.

Why is this important?

Coretta Scott King's words are deeply important in this moment. In her letter opposing Sessions' 1986 nomination as a federal judge she wrote, "Anyone who has used the power of his office as United States Attorney to intimidate and chill the free exercise of the ballot by citizens should not be elevated to our courts. Mr. Sessions has used the awesome powers of his office in a shabby attempt to intimidate and frighten elderly black voters. For this reprehensible conduct, he should not be rewarded with a federal judgeship."

Coretta Scott King's words needed to be heard on the Senate floor because the current President's rhetoric has shown him to be racist, xenophobic and bigoted. At the direction of his closest advisor, Steve Bannon, this president elevated Jeff Sessions as the Attorney General to so that he can and will execute the white nationalist agenda of the "alt right." We know that nothing he or his cabinet will do will promote and encourage justice for African Americans or indeed for anyone in our country's diverse population.

Sen. Warren was doing her duty as a United States Senator by reading the words of Coretta Scott King before Sessions was allowed to act as Attorney General. Though Sessions has been approved it is still necessary for McConnell to apologize for silencing Senator Warren while allowing men like Sen. Udall read the exact same letter from Coretta Scott King. Join me in demanding that he apologize to Sen. Warren and women in general for his sexism.
