Demand the DC Council protect ALL children from hair discrimination

to protect DC children attending DC public, charter AND private schools from discrimination on the basis of hair.
Why is this important?
My 10-year old daughter, Nyirah was targeted and humiliated in front of students and staff as she was kicked out of school because of her hairstyle. Countless children across the country are severely punished because of school dress code and grooming policies.
The school my child attended implemented a discriminatory hair policy in September 2019 that stated "All students are required to have natural hair styles only. This means no weaves, extensions and other forms of synthetic hair are not allowed, No exceptions. Hair must be neat and well groomed. No radical cut, style or color is acceptable".
In DC, private schools are not held to the same standards as DC public and charter schools, which do not allow students to be suspended or expelled on the basis of dress code/hair policies.
It’s important for the DC Council to pass The CROWN Act, which stands for “Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair”. It is a law that prohibits discrimination based on hair style and hair texture. Under this Act, ALL CHILDREN attending DC public, charter AND private schools will be protected, as well as adults.

Discriminatory policies target, punish, and restrict children due to their appearance. Studies show that Black children already receive harsher punishments for non-violent/ minor offenses than their non-Black counterparts. Problematic policies like these do harm to the populations they serve.
In a fair and just world, children would be judged based on the content of their character and NOT on their appearance. By signing this petition, you'’re letting the DC Council know that we need the CROWN ACT passed and placing a higher value on children’s education.
Together, we can end hair discrimination for ALL DC CHILDREN!
