End Qualified Immunity

Hold killer cops accountable by ending qualified immunity in California as Colorado has done with SB 217.
Why is this important?
Qualified Immunity is a legal defense that police and other government officials use to protect themselves from civil lawsuits. In the last 20 years Qualified Immunity has been used to dismiss thousands of federal cases of excessive and deadly force by police officers, leaving victims and families with no justice. This has also created a culture where police officers know they can violate the law without fear of being sued or held personally liable.
Ending Qualified Immunity would mean police officers have more accountability in their life and death decisions, and that police departments would have more incentive for investing in de-escalation and non-deadly tactics. While qualified immunity is only one small element in the layers of racist policy and racial bias in the policing in this country, it is one that is important to so many families in their painful journey for justice for their loved ones.
