We ask Fox News Group and 21st Century Fox to denounce Bill O'Reilly's racist comments against Congressman Maxine Waters of California's 43rd Congressional District, issue a formal apology to Congressman Waters, and institute policies to fight against the racial hatred Fox's representatives have stoked among millions of its loyal viewers.
Why is this important?
Fox News has long stood silent as its hosts, commentators and guests malign people of color. In the name of common decency, we ask Fox News Group and 21st Century Fox to denounce Bill O'Reilly's racist comments against Congressman Maxine Waters of California's 43rd Congressional District, issue a formal apology to Congressman Waters, and institute policies to fight against the racial hatred Fox's representatives have stoked among millions of its loyal viewers.
Fox's wanton disregard for dignity - of its viewers, employees and the affected people it denigrates - incite prejudice, hatred, verbal and emotional abuse, and physical violence against people of color. Your employees regularly create conditions which threaten the safety of black men, women, and children in dealing with law enforcement, our courts, prisons, government agencies, schools, hospitals and other key institutions, not to mention interactions with private citizens who have learned to hate or increased their level of hate by watching your station. Your continued silence publicly in these matters not only makes you complicit but an active participant in this ugly oppression.
As one of the most trusted names in news, you have an obligation to stop the repeated humiliations and harm your employees regularly perpetrate on communities of color. It is corrosive to their self-worth and to our civil society as a whole. Don't you think taking a stand against racial hatred is important? You have an opportunity to use this teachable moment to effect real, lasting change in our country. Please do the right thing.
