Long Beach PD, Release All Video Footage & Drop Charges Against Brandon Boyd’s Family

On Tuesday, November 19, 2024, Long Beach Police Department callously gunned down and stole the life of Brandon Boyd after he contacted 911 for help as he was having a mental health crisis on the steps of his childhood church.

Despite begging and pleading for the police to let them speak with Brandon in his moments of crisis, many family members, childhood friends and community members watched as Long Beach PD launched a flash grenade, shot rubber bullets, deployed other “less lethal” weapons, and discharged live ammunition that ultimately took his life.

After gunning Brandon down in the presence of dozens of onlookers, police turned their attention to his family members. They brutally assaulted and arrested two of Brandon’s sisters and his young niece. One sister sustained a fractured arm as a result of this heinous police violence.

When we think things couldn’t have been worse, in a heartless act of what can only be described as torture, the detained family members were made to sit injured and handcuffed in the back of police cars, looking at their loved one’s lifeless body for hours. Then they were forced to spend their first grieving night in jail.

Nearly two months after watching their loved one be murdered by police, and less than two weeks after they lay Brandon to rest, members of the Boyd family are being summoned to court to face criminal charges. Brandon’s sisters and niece responded like anyone would after witnessing and experiencing their loved one being gunned down by the Long Beach Police Department - the very people he reached out to for help! Yet Brandon’s family members are being criminalized for being human.

What’s more, it’s been over 45 days since Brandon was taken from us, but Long Beach PD still hasn’t released the full 2.5 hours of video footage for the world to see what transpired before they called in a SWAT team and ordered a flash grenade, despite Brandon having his hands in the air and de-escalating himself in the moments before he was killed.

Why is this important?

No one should endure this type of heartache and torture, especially after experiencing the trauma of watching their loved one’s life be taken right in front of their eyes. We are demanding that:
  • The Long Beach Police Department immediately release all video footage of the 2.5 hours of interactions and engagement they had with Brandon before they stole his life
  • Drop all charges against the Boyd family members
  • Release the names of authorizing and shooting officers
  • Prosecute killer cops
