Tell Gov Whitmer to Hire an Independent Prosecutor to bring #JusticeForSabrie

The family requests that a special independent prosecutor/grand jury be appointed to investigate Sabrie Alexander’s death. Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer can make this happen. We insist that the persons responsible for Sabrie’s death be held accountable. A federal civil case was filed on May 4th, 2017 and is still pending a trial date.

Why is this important?

Sabrie died in the Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility at age 27. During Sabrie’s solitary confinement preceding her death, she suffered over 100 seizures/panic attacks. Sabrie was under the care of Corizon Healthcare Inc., a privatized healthcare provider. The medical and guard staff routinely ignored her screams for help and in fact laughed when her medical emergencies occurred. Sabrie was even told by a nurse to hypnotize herself so that she could breathe. Ultimately, Sabrie died a horrific and gruesome death, thus sentenced to a de facto and unauthorized death penalty at the hands of the Michigan Department of Corrections.

Sabrie’s death was investigated by the Michigan Attorney General’s Office (AG), Michigan State Police (MSP), MDOC Internal Affairs Division, the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office, United States Department of Justice (DOJ), along with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan. None of the investigations resulted in criminal charges against the staff responsible for Sabrie’s care. The family maintained that Sabrie’s death was a homicide, and the investigations into the circumstances of Sabrie’s death were superficial and conducted in a manner to protect the responsible parties.

We all know too well the disparity of justice in the criminal justice system for black and brown people. Lives are at stake not only with direct police violence but also within the walls of correctional facilities. We must bring #JusticeforSabrie and all inmates who have lost their lives due to mistreatment in correctional facilities.
