Name and Arrest the ICE Agent Who Killed #KeithPorter

On New Year’s Eve, Black father, son, neighbor, and community member, #KeithPorter stepped outside the front door of his apartment in Northridge. Like many around the nation, he fired his gun in the air to celebrate the coming of 2026. An ICE agent who, unbeknownst to Keith, lived in the same complex set his sights on Keith - not as a neighbor, but as a target. The still-unnamed-agent went inside, put on his tactical gear, grabbed his ICE-issued firearm, stepped back outside, and shot this Black man dead in front of his own home.

In a sickening "double murder," where the system of policing assassinates the character of Black victims after their lives have been stolen, LAPD made public statements casting Keith Porter as a "suspect" and an "active shooter," rather than a victim and hailing his killer as a hero. Nowhere is it mentioned that Keith was his mother’s only child, who called to check in on her every single morning. It doesn’t talk about his stellar work record and the laughter and joy that he brought to his Home Depot coworkers. There are no mentions of him as a “girl dad,” who brings light to his 9-year-old’s eyes or that he couldn’t stop bragging about his 19-year-old, a standout college sophomore. Keith was deeply loved in his Compton community and moved to Northridge “for love.” He loved to fish with his uncles. His nickname, “Pooter,” was given to him as a small child and stuck with him…even at 43.

We have three demands for LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell:
1. An immediate end to the character assassination of Keith Porter and a retraction of any statements that refer to him as a "suspect," an "active shooter," or anything less than a crime victim, loving father and son, and valued community member.
2. That the off-duty ICE agent who killed Keith be publicly identified.
3. That the off-duty ICE agent who killed Keith be arrested and presented to the District Attorney for prosecution.

Justice in the name of Keith Porter also requires that his murderer be held accountable and prosecuted, that ICE be abolished, and that we reimagine public safety - undoing interlocking systems of policing that steal Black life and investing in community resources.

Why is this important?

Keith Porter should still be here...to raise his daughters, to love his mother, to fish with his uncle, to bring joy to rooms, and light to community. Black fathers...Black sons...Black people...matter. We matter. We must speak up, step up, demand, organize for, and build a world where our lives are protected.

As ICE plagues our communities, Black and Brown migrants viciously targeted, brutalized, detained, and deported, those who are birthright citizens of this country are increasingly also being harmed and killed...especially African Americans.

The fight for Keith Porter is a fight to protect the sanctity of Black life.  It is a fight against white-supremacist terrorism and fascism. It is a fight to hold ICE, police, and government accountable. This petition is an essential piece of that.  When you sign and share, you are honoring the life of Keith Porter and putting it on record that you refuse to sit idly by as Black lives are stolen.
