Tell LHSAA to stop discriminating against undocumented students!

As a result of this campaign, the LHSAA amended its policy to allow students to use their Louisiana School ID number instead of their social security number!

Tell LHSAA to stop discriminating against undocumented students!

We demand that LHSAA end their policy requiring students to have social security numbers to participate in athletics, and no longer perpetuate policies that discriminate against undocumented students.

Why is this important?

Current policy from the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) prevents undocumented students from participating in school sports. LHSAA bylaw 1.5.1 requires students to give the last four digits of their social security number in order to enroll in athletics. Additionally, in a memo released on November 2nd by LHSAA Executive Director, Eddie Bonine, he states that, “unless a student is coming through an approved foreign exchange program the student must have a social security number to be registered for LHSAA athletics.” Requiring a social security number creates a barrier preventing undocumented students from participating in the same educationally sponsored activities as their peers. No other state athletic program in the country asks for or requires a social security number to participate in high school sports.

By requiring students to provide a social security number the LHSAA is:

● Violating the 14th amendment by discriminating against undocumented students. Children are guaranteed the same educational opportunities regardless of immigration or citizenship status.

● Violating U.S. Justice Department and Department of Education guidelines stating that school districts are not permitted to ask about a student’s immigration status and that schools cannot require student or parent social security numbers to enroll in school.

● Taking a cruel and discriminatory approach to high school sports.

● Crushing the dreams and hard work put in by successful undocumented students.

High school athletics serve a crucial role in the development of a young person’s character and self-esteem and are an essential part of a well-rounded education for students across the country. We demand that LHSAA end this policy, and no longer perpetuate policies that discriminate against undocumented students.

In addition to this petition, you can let the LHSAA know we will not stand for discriminatory policies by contacting them at beyondthegame@lhsaa.org or 225-296-5882. Executive director Eddie Bonine can be contacted at ebonine@lhsaa.org. You can also let your voice be heard at their annual conference, January 23-25 in Baton Rouge. It is our responsibility to hold decision makers accountable for the consequences their decisions have on our communities and the entire state of Louisiana.

Reasons for signing

  • The children I work with deserve the same opportunities and privileges that are enjoyed by their classmates. They are just as talented and enthusiastic about sports and should be granted the opportunity to show case their skills. It would be a loss to Louisiana high schools if such talent is not developed and utilized because of something the children have no control over.
  • This is just another example of the American government using foreigners as a scapegoat for our country’s economic turmoil
  • This is unacceptable!! Discrimination in school sports is cruel!
